Art that represents the space within
Our gallery features local and international artists who approach the human mind through introspection and abstract representations of brain structure and function. The Brain Observatory's gallery is a space that brings together artists and scientists so they can learn from and inspire each other.
Our programs encourage artists to play a meaningful role in neuroscience by applying their purely subjective interpretation of data and current theoretical concepts. Conversely, we stimulate scientists to recognize and leverage their artistic potential as a tool for discovery and innovation.
Our gallery wall is also a blank canvas for amateurs and artists in the making. We have featured a collection of brain self-portraits made by students who visited The Brain Observatory. We provide them with complete art kits and let each student pick their preferred materials. Abstract thinking, combined with newly-acquired knowledge of brain anatomy generates intriguing inner scenarios. This activity is an example of how a simple artistic activity can acquire existential and therapeutic value.
